ABSTRACT
The public health relevance of chronic constipation is the object of extensive study due to its increasing incidence, the negative economic impact it produces and the multiple complications it leads to, concluding in a deterioration in the quality of life of patients who suffer from it. Furthermore, strategies for the concise study and treatment approach are still lacking. With the recent development of different diagnostic techniques it has been possible to elucidate several of the pathophysiological mechanisms by which this pathology develops, which has greatly helped to create strategies for earlier identification of this condition and its classification, to manage treatments aimed at the identified therapeutic targets. This review offers an update on these diagnostic and therapeutic approach strategies.
Keywords: Constipation, chronic constipation, secondary Constipation, laxatives.
